Riding LessonsWe have a team of instructors at Nyanza who cater for pupils from novice level to advanced competition riders. The correct instructor to suit your needs is carefully selected for you.
All our instructors are trained and supervised by Ann Davies, and Wandy Williams. Wandy has had horses here since 1968, and the riding school has been operating since 1983. Ann Davies became a valued part of our team in 2004, we consider ourselves very fortunate to have someone of her calibre at Nyanza. For those who have not yet met her, Ann joined us from Italy. She trained in England at the Talland School of Equitation and was subsequently employed there as an instructor before going on to Italy, where she ran her own very successful competitive riding stable. She trained horses and riders to high levels, including for the European Three-Day Event Championships. Her pupils have successfully competed all over Europe. Ann is a qualified International Level 3 instructor, as well as a Judge in Three-Day Eventing, M level Dressage and Equitation. She supervises and trains all our staff in their stable management, riding, and teaching. She is also available on certain days for lessons by prior arrangement, for those who are serious about wanting to further their riding ability.
Lessons are held throughout the week and on weekends by special arrangement. They range from lessons for the novice in balance and control, to those for riders with the ability to do dressage, show jumping and equitation.
If you are living locally, the best idea is to ride as often as you can each week. Some people come once or twice a week, some come every day! Our facilities are excellent, we have large jumping and dressage arenas and have added a wall of mirrors which enables the rider to visually assess their position on the horse and the horse' outline and movement. We also have a large grass jumping arena and two separate lunge rings.
For those who are not living here, but just visiting our area, it is best to fit as much as possible into your stay. The ideal situation if you would like to learn the most is to have at least one lesson a day, and then either a second lesson or trail the same day. We now have an ever-growing number of riders from afar, who come to stay for several days in order to further their riding ability. For us it is very encouraging to watch our pupils progressing over the days, and we hope to provide a basis for many years of happy horsemanship. All lessons must please be booked at least the day before.
Schooling and Lesson PackagesFor those who want to take advantage of the level of instruction and schooling we have to offer we also provide a 5 day training package. These packages are aimed for local people who keep their own horses at home, or those stabled elsewhere who would like to take advantage of the expertise Ann has to offer. We now have horses coming from far afield to benefit from the experience. During these packages your horse comes and stays here at Nyanza and works every day; a combination of schooling of the horse by Ann on some of the days, together with lessons for you on the other days. You can of course arrange with her for only schooling or only lessons if you prefer. For those coming from further afield we can extend the package for longer to suit you. This package is offered at a very reasonable rate to allow more people to seize this amazing opportunity to work intensively with such a highly qualified and experienced rider and instructor as Ann. Our packages are ideal for horse and rider to progress through the early stages of the young horse’s schooling
Riding ClinicsGeneral Info
Riding Clinics are lessons only, structured for those who would like to work more intensively over a shorter period. Participants can bring their own horse or ride one of ours, but both horse and rider have to be reasonably fit. The clinics can be private lessons or small groups of people of the same ability (maximum two to four people in a lesson, depending on their ability). Anyone is welcome to organize their own group of riders, especially those from afar – you can have a valuable few days together.
Accommodation for Packages and ClinicsRiders are free to come from home if living close enough, organize their own accommodation, or enjoy any of the various types of accommodation that Nyanza has to offer.
PonycampsOur Pony camps are designed for children who would like to combine learning with fun and games. Participants stay overnight, and the days are spent in a mixture of lessons, lectures, training competitions, quizzes and fun and games. For the Ponycamps we take a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 10 children. (Larger groups by special arrangement). It is great fun for the children to come with their own group of friends, and spend a few days enjoying the fun of the farm while furthering their horsemanship skills.
VAULTINGVaulting is a new sport to Swaziland, although it is becoming recognized more and more world wide. Similar to gymnastics on horseback, it is wonderful to improve the balance and confidence of a rider. It has huge implications in the field of development and less advantaged riders, as only one horse is required for a whole team of riders. It brings in a whole new group of people into this horsey world we love so much, as those already involved in gymnastics become more and more involved with the sport, without their financial status being such a factor as in the other equestrian disciplines. We are very excited to be able to bring this opportunity to our young people, and hope to be able to incorporate the local schools as well as our regular customers. We have specially trained horses who have already started teaching our young riders this wonderful spectator sport and we feel it has a great future both here at Nyanza and for the rest of Swaziland...
